Oakhill Primary School Garden
 AFTER - 19th May 2007
BEFORE - 8th November 2006 Oakhill Garden looking from the playground to the back of Grosvenor Avenue
Background Oakhill primary school has the use of four allotments with access from the school grounds. Although we have had the allotment for a few years, lack of resources has prevented us from developing it. There has been some work on the site. The site was cleared and a hard path was laid that circles the site. However, it had become overgrown again as can be seen from the photography from November 2006. Along the whole of east side (right of the picture) is a native hedge, which is in good condition. To the right of the picture is a cherry tree and an ash and an abandoned tree nursery planted by the children a few years ago. Some of the trees may be able to be used for hedging. To the left is a lilac. In the centre of the ground is a large area that had been covered with plastic to suppress weeds. This was lifted during the Easter holidays 2007 and it is hoped that grass will grow. If it is cut regularly, this should suppress weeds.
Vision Managing such a large area as a cultivated allotment would be a huge task. Instead we hope to create a managed area that is rich in wildlife, safe and suitable for children to explore and have outdoor lessons in, but easy to maintain. We will plant another native hedge (mainly hawthorn and holly for security) along the bottom edge and flowering shrubs and plants along the left-hand side (buddleia etc) to attract butterflies and bees. The bottom left corner is very waterlogged. Rather than try to improve this we will create a bog garden with water-loving plants and small trees that are tollerant of wet conditions. A pond may be a possibility in this area although this will be subject to a risk assessment. The centre area will be grass creating a lawn large enough to accommodate a whole class. This will be bisected with a flower bed or shrubs. The top right corner, which has a mature cherry tree and ash will be left to grow more wild (although still managed). A log pile and bird feeding station will be created in this area. We may grow some vegetables, possibly in raised beds, and create a compost heap to recycle the children's fruit waste.
If you can help in any way, either with time, equipment or materials or plants, please contact the school. The success of this project depends entirely on the support it receives.

Back in the spring we ordered a free native hedge from the Tree For All scheme. The pack arrived today, containing 50 native hedge plants. These will be planted along the bottom fence and will give us a native hedge on two sides (three, if you count the brambles), which will benefit wildlife and provide added security. We have also ordered another hedge pack which will arrive in the spring.

Councillor Billington has arranged for the allotment project to be awarded £1000. We still have lots more products to come from Focus DIY, including a shed, fence and bird feeding products, so we have decided to spend the money on power tools and a gate.
We have ordered some professional quality garden power tools, the ones that the council use for parks so they should last us a lifetime.
We now have a full range of professional Stihl powertools
We are getting a powerful Stihl engine with attachments for strimming, brush cuttings, cultivating, pruning (mini chainsaw), long-reach hedgecutter and safety equipment. These should make maintaining the site a lot easier (and more fun!). We have also ordered a ...

Jo Hirst, Focus DIY's Environment Manager, joins Holly class for a bulb planting session
Focus DIY's bulb supplier kindly donated hundreds of bulbs. They brought daffoldils (full size and dwarf), tulips and bluebells. On Monday afternoon, they joined Mrs Clifford-Jones and Holly class for a planting session. The children worked really hard and planted well over 100 bulbs. [On later dates, hundreds more were planted. Come back in the spring to see the results].

We recruited local kids (actually they begged to help!) to build and paint some picnic benches. We have three picnic benches from Focus as well as two hardwood benches. The hardwood benches will be put on a decking platform. The benches were painted with green Focus Timbercare which should help them to last for years as well as making them look attractive.

In preparation for a bird feeding area at the top of the allotment by the tree, we have created a 6m long willow screen to provide a secluded area for the birds to feed. The willow screen was kindly provided by the manufacturer.

We now have some large wooden planters. The large one measures 2.4m x 1.2m and is made of pressure treated interlocked decking joists with a decking seat around the rim. Two smaller planters are made from log fence panels. One measures 3m x 1m and the smaller one 1m x 1m. We also have two half brewer's barrels and two herb/strawberry pots.
We have a dwarf buddliea bush and some herbs (lemon thyme, chives and parsley).

On the last day of the summer term, the greenhouse has arrived. Focus DIY has provided a 8'x6' polycarbonate greenhouse. As well as being safer than glass, the double-walled polycarbonate retains more heat and spreads sunlight to avoid scorching. The greenhouse supplier will be installing it next Wednesday and they will also be providing a hydro watering system which will be used to automatically water the greenhouse plants from collected rainwater, according to the temperature.
